Chapter 14

This wasn't the first time I'd been interviewed by DI Ian Chisholm after a murder, but it was the first time I’d felt guilty because I knew I was going to hold back information that could be important to his case.

The police set up an interview room in one of the small rehearsal rooms in the theater wing. Ian decided to interview Scarlett first and then me, since she was the first one to stumble on the body. Scarlett clung to me and begged that I might be allowed to sit in on her interview and, after thinking for a minute, he agreed.

To say our little threesome was awkward would be an understatement. Ian was obviously still crushing on Scarlett and, I imagined, hurt and confused by the way she’d so brutally dumped him when he’d taken her on our date. Then there was his discomfort over the fact that I was the one he’d jilted in order to take Scarlett to dinner. And here we all were together.

I wasn't certain if he realized that Scarlett had feelings for me, but the atmosphere was so uncomfortable I didn't suppose the air could be any thicker with unspoken yearning and confusion if he did.

Since I was partly responsible for this romantic mess, I was glad to sit in on Scarlett’s interview if only to prevent Ian from making a fool of himself over her. He could not afford to let his potion-induced infatuation show while conducting a murder investigation. I might be annoyed with him, but I wasn't going to let him damage his career.

I had already told Ian that Scarlett and I had met at the Porter’s Lodge, had walked into the empty, dark theater and how she’d discovered Jeremy's body. He had asked me if Jeremy had any enemies that I knew of, and, since Scarlett or someone would mention the fistfight the night before, I told him about that as dismissively as I could, making it sound like a couple of foolish boys getting into it because they both wanted the same toy.

In fact, that's exactly what I had thought, and if it weren't that Charlie hadn’t been home last night when Alice and I walked past his flat, nor had he been home this morning, I would've said the fight and the murder were completely unrelated.

Now, I wasn’t so sure.

In spite of what I’d said to Alice, I thought it was very likely Charlie hadn't been home all night. Guilt was my unpleasant companion as I considered how much at fault I was for getting involved in that love potion.

I now recalled, bitterly, that when Violet and I had arrived at Margaret Twig’s house that cauldron had already contained liquid. Margaret had said there was nothing in the pot but distilled water, but I had no certain knowledge that she wasn't lying to me.

I had no idea why she’d want to spread a potion around that not only caused love madness but possibly inflamed lovers to the point that they would kill each other.
